How to Prepare Sea Moss.

When it comes to preparing sea moss at home, the process is pretty simple. The first thing that should be done is to wash it and then soak it in cold water for a full day, ensuring that the water is changed pretty frequent. Once the sea moss has doubled in size, become white, and gelatinous, you should be all set for the next step.

Now, add the soaked sea moss along with a bit of water to a high-powered blender and blend until it becomes a thick, gel-like liquid. Store it in a tightly sealed mason jar and keep refrigerated for up to two weeks. Wallah!

What Recipes Can I add Sea Moss in?

Adding sea moss to recipes such as smoothies, soups, stews, Baked Goods, and more. Therefore, the sky is the limit in terms of adding sea moss to a quick meal.

Common FAQs for this Irish Moss (Sea Moss) Drink.

How Do I Store Leftovers? Can I Freeze It?

OK, so like most other drinks, you can store leftover Irish Moss in an airtight jar or covered jug for up to a week. When it comes to freezing, you can store it in an airtight jar or container (portioned out) for up to 3 months. Once ready to use, simply thaw it out overnight in the refrigerator and enjoy.

Do I need to purchase the gel or dry sea moss?

Honestly, you can do either! When purchasing the gel, it makes things easier since the entire process has been done for you and you can also use the remaining sea moss gel for other drinks/recipes. However, if you deicde to purchase the dry sea moss and make it at home yourself----that's fine too.

Can I Add Additional Ingredients?

Absolutely! You can add additional spices such as turmeric for added health benefits. In addition, you can either use actual alcohol or rum for a buzz or Holiday gathering feel. To sweeten, you can choose to add maple syrup or Agave instead of dates---in case you aren't a fan of dates, themselves.

Prep Time: 5 minutes
Total Time: 5 minutes
Serves: 2 servings

Ingredients

DRINK:

  • 2 Tbsps Irish Moss Gel
  • 1 cup Almond milk (You can use your fave plant-based milk!)
  • 4-5 Medjool dates, pitted + soaked (See Notes!)
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • ½ teaspoon ground cinnamon
  • ¼ teaspoon ground nutmeg
  • teaspoon ground allspice

Instructions

TO MAKE THE DRINK:

  • Add all ingredients to a high-powered blender and blend until smooth, about 1-2 minutes. NOTE: If drink is too thick, simply add an additional ¼ cup milk.
  • To serve, pour Irish Moss into prepared glass(es) and top with a pinch of cinnamon, if desired.
  • Sip and enjoy!

Tips & Tricks

  • STORAGE: Store any leftovers in the refrigerator, tightly sealed or in a covered mason jar for up to 1 week. Freezer-friendly (See Post for details).
  • DATES: To soak, add dates to a small bowl with fresh water for 10 minutes or so. This softens it and hydrates them.
  • WHAT PLANT-BASED MILKS ARE GOOD FOR THIS RECIPE? My go-to plant-based milk is Almond milk from Califia Farms. However, you can always use your fave or one of the following: coconut milk, oat milk (froths/foams VERY WELL), flax milk, etc.
  • ADDITIONAL OPTIONS: To create a kick of flavor or add nutrients to this drink, you can add any of the following: turmeric (about ¼ tsp), your favorite nut butter, chia seeds, flaxseed meal, cacao powder (about 1 Tbsp), or an additional sweetener such as Agave or Maple syrup. For extra creaminess, you can also add soaked cashews (½ cup).
SEA MOSS GEL: For details on how to make this from home, see post!
