Tip of the Week

Each week I share one of my favorite cooking tips to help you be a better chef and create more amazing meals. This week I wanted to talk all about using your ice cube tray for more than just ice. It may sound a little crazy but let me tell you all about the many things your ice cube tray can do!

Wooden bowl of Citrus Ginger Turmeric Ice Cubes with Tea

Ice cube trays are perfectly portioned and completely freezer safe (of course!). They are a fantastic way to make creative ice cubes that will liven up your drinks, store and portion sauces or make easy mocktails. And these are just a few ideas for how to use your ice cube tray!

Genius Ways to Use an Ice Cube Tray

  1. Citrus Ginger Turmeric Ice Cubes - Make this immunity-boosting drink mix then freeze it into perfectly portioned ice cubes. Take one out every morning for a pre-made detox drink shot. You can blend a few and make them into a smoothie or just heat a cube up in the microwave to melt it. Such an easy and convenient way to stay healthy.
  2. Coffee Ice Cubes - If you have extra coffee in the morning, pour it into your ice cube tray and freeze. Next time you want an iced coffee, use your coffee ice cubes so your drink doesn’t get watered down.
  3. Pesto Cubes - Make a big batch of pesto and freeze it in an ice cube tray. Whenever you want fresh pesto in the winter, simply thaw a few cubes and you have a delicious, summery sauce ready to go!
  4. Easy Smoothies - Make a double batch of your favorite smoothie and freeze it in your ice cube trays. Pop a few cubes into a blender and puree the frozen cubes right back up anytime you want a fresh smoothie!

I recommend using silicone ice cube trays that are super flexible and easy to pop out the frozen cubes of goodness. Look for molds that are about 3-4 tablespoons or bigger, especially if you will be portioning smoothies and sauces. Once you master the art of the ice, you will never look at an ice cube tray the same way ever again!
