What Makes This Homemade Lemonade Pink?

While some recipes opt for artificial dyes, I prefer the natural route. In this recipe, I use the vibrant hue of watermelon to achieve that pretty pink shade. Plus the flavor works SO WELL with the classic lemonade flavors. However, I've heard of others using ingredients like beet juice for a similar effect!

Ingredients For This Refreshing Pink Lemonade

LEMONADE:

  • Filtered water. This is the base of the lemonade.
  • Lemon juice. Freshly-squeezed works best!
  • Raw honey. I find raw organic honey to have the best flavor. Nate's Organic is a great option! You can sub with organic cane sugar or maple syrup for a vegan option.
  • Watermelon juice. Freshly-made watermelon juice works best or you can also use cubed watermelon--- You'll just need to blend it with everything and strain.

How To Make Pink Lemonade

This recipe is a breeze, and the toughest part? Squeezing those lemons! Everything else comes together in a quick 10 minutes. Tip: Prep plenty of ice in advance to keep your lemonade icy cold!

TO MAKE THE LEMONADE:

  • In a pitcher, add the lemon juice, water, and honey, and stir together to combine. Add in the watermelon juice and stir with a wooden spoon until the lemonade turns a light colored pink and everything is combined.
  • Refrigerate to chill or serve immediately, over ice cubes. Sip and enjoy!

Tips For The Best Pink Lemonade

After whipping up homemade lemonade time and time again, I've learned a thing or two to make sure it's downright amazing every single time!

  • Use fresh ingredients ---- fresh lemons + ripe watermelon give the best best flavor.
  • Taste the lemonade as you go and adjust the sweetness by adding more honey or sugar if needed.
  • Chill the lemonade thoroughly before serving, or add plenty of ice to keep it cold.
  • Make it stronger ---- Prepare the lemonade slightly stronger than you prefer, as it will dilute when served over ice.
  • For a smoother texture, strain your lemonade mixture before serving to remove any pulp or seeds.

Add-On Ingredients For Pink Lemonade

While this Pink Lemonade is absolutely delicious as it is, if you're looking to mix it up here are some ideas:

  • Fresh mint leaves
  • Ripe strawberries
  • Cucumber for a cooling effect.
  • Basil or Thyme Sprigs
  • Add a hint of tropical sweetness + extra hydration by swapping out some of the regular water with coconut water.

How to Make Clear Ice Cubes without a Clear Ice Cube Mold

One of the greatest phenomenons when it comes to ice cubes has been seeing super clear ice cubes from those clear ice cube systems or molds and wanting to try it, but not necessarily wanting to have a huge contraption in my freezer. Haha. Anyone else feel my pain? Whelp, no need to worry----I've done my research and tested it out a bit and have found some solutions to help those of us who don't have any fancy system to making clear ice cubes. Here are a few ways:

Tip #1: It's best to use water that is distilled or super-filtered to avoid gasses and dissolved oxygen, which are the two things that cause our ice to "fog up" when frozen.

Tip #2: Boil your water and freeze your water hot. Again, much to my previous point, this removes any dissolved oxygen or gasses. Just be sure to carefully pour the hot water into your ice cube tray or mold-----preferably one made from materials that naturally insulates like silicone. Also, ensure that your tray lays FLAT while freezing.

Tip #3: Slow freeze your ice cubes. This should be done for about 24 hours, which allows any impurities to be forced out of the ice---resulting in much clearer ice.

Pink Lemonade Q + A's

How to store?

Keep any leftovers in the refrigerator, tightly covered in your pitcher or in a sealed mason jar. Best if consumed within a few days.

Can I make this vegan?

Yes! Simply swap the honey for another sweetener of your choice, maple syrup, cane sugar, coconut nectar or agave are great options.

My homemade lemonade is too sweet, can I fix it?

No sweat! If your lemonade is too sweet, just toss in more water or lemon juice. When you pour it over ice, less sweet lemonade tends to thin out quicker. Also, remember, lemonade tastes way sweeter when it's warm compared to when it's ice-cold. So, before you go adding more water, give it a chill over some ice and see if it hits the spot. You might find it's just right!

Can I use concentrated lemon juice?

When you're in a pinch yes you can! But save it as a last resort. Fresh lemon juice gives the best flavor!

Is there another natural way to make the lemonade pink?

You can also use beet juice as another substitute for creating the pinkish color for this lemonade.
