What Are the Best Lemons to Use for Lemonade?

When it comes to crafting the perfect homemade lemonade, the type of lemon you choose can make all the difference. Not all lemons are created equal in flavor, juiciness, or sweetness. Also, look for lemons that feel heavy for their size (a sign of juiciness), have thin skin, and give slightly when gently squeezed. Avoid lemons with hard skin or blemishes—they’re likely dry inside.

Here's what to look for:

Meyer Lemons (Sweet + Floral). If you want a naturally sweeter lemonade with low acidity, Meyer lemons are a top pick. These small, round lemons are a cross between a lemon and a mandarin orange, offering a mild, floral citrus flavor that needs less added sugar.

Eureka Lemons (Classic + Tangy). The most common variety found in grocery stores, Eureka lemons are bright yellow, tart, and juicy—perfect for traditional lemonade with that classic, tangy punch. Great for balancing sweetener and zest.

Lisbon Lemons (Bright + Bold). Very similar to Eureka, Lisbon lemons are slightly more acidic and intense, which makes them ideal for a bold, zesty lemonade if you enjoy a stronger citrus bite.

Organic Lemons (Best for Zesting). If you're planning to use lemon zest in your recipe for extra flavor, organic lemons are the best choice. They’re free from waxes and pesticides, which is ideal when using the peel.

How to Make Refreshing Homemade Lemonade

The first thing you need to make for this tasty drink is to prep the lemon juice by squeezing the lemons using a  citrus presser or manual citrus squeezer or strainer to prevent seeds. Then, you whip together the simple syrup with a quick boil and allows it to cool completely before adding it in with the remaining lemonade ingredients and assemble. Serve and enjoy!

Ingredients

Here’s what you need for this Refreshing Homemade Lemonade drink:

  • Lemons. Use big, juicy lemons to add a tart pop of flavor. You need about 6-8 or so, plus lemons sliced for garnish. Feel free to use Meyer lemons, Eureka lemons, Lisbon or Organic lemons.
  • Sugar. I like to use organic cane sugar for the simple syrup, but you can substitute with raw, organic honey, or maple syrup.
  • Water. You'll need this to create the simple syrup and for servings. For clearer ice cubes, it's best to use store-bought "pure" water. See post for more info!
  • Garnish. This creates a nice, fancy experience for your lemonade. I love using lemon slices and fresh mint leaves, if desired.

Tips for Making the Perfect Homemade Lemonade

  • Use Freshly-squeezed lemon juice only. Skip the bottled stuff! Fresh lemons offer brighter, more natural flavor with no preservatives. A citrus juicer makes the process quick and mess-free.
  • Roll lemons before juicing. Gently roll your lemons on the countertop using the palm of your hand to release more juice before cutting. This softens the fruit and breaks down the inner membranes.
  • Make a simple syrup first. Dissolve your sweetener (sugar, honey, agave, etc.) in warm water before adding it to the lemonade. This prevents gritty texture and allows for even sweetness throughout.
  • Balance sweet + tart. Start with a 2:1 ratio of water to lemon juice and sweeten to taste. Too sour? Add more syrup. Too sweet? Add a splash of extra lemon or cold water. It’s all about your personal preference!
  • Chill before serving. Let your lemonade cool in the fridge for at least 30 minutes so the flavors can meld. This also cuts down the need for ice, which can dilute the drink too much.
  • Add a pinch of salt (Yes, really!). A tiny pinch of sea salt enhances the natural lemon flavor and gives your lemonade that next-level depth—similar to how salt enhances desserts.
  • Elevate with add-ins. Infuse with fresh herbs (mint, basil, rosemary) or fruits (strawberries, blueberries, cucumber) for a twist. Or swap some water for sparkling water for a fizzy version!
  • Use ice cubes made from lemonade. Freeze a small batch of your lemonade in ice cube trays. This way, your drink stays cold without getting watered down as the ice melts.

Best Sweetener Alternatives for Homemade Lemonade

Looking to make your lemonade refined sugar-free or just want to switch things up? There are plenty of natural and low-glycemic sweetener options that blend beautifully with the bright citrus of fresh lemons. Here are the best sweeteners to try:

Maple Syrup. Pure maple syrup adds a deep, earthy sweetness that complements lemonade beautifully, especially when paired with herbs like rosemary or thyme. It dissolves easily in warm water or simple syrup.

Agave Nectar. Agave is a plant-based liquid sweetener that’s sweeter than sugar but with a neutral flavor, making it a great choice for classic lemonade or fruit-infused variations.

Honey. Raw or local honey adds natural sweetness with trace antioxidants and a slight floral note. Best when dissolved into warm water first to avoid clumping.

Coconut Sugar. If you're going for a more caramel-like, earthy flavor, coconut sugar is a great unrefined option. Create a quick syrup with it before mixing into lemonade.

Stevia or Monk Fruit. These zero-calorie sweeteners are ideal for low-carb or diabetic-friendly lemonade. Choose liquid versions for easier blending and start with a small amount—these are very concentrated!

Date Syrup or Soaked Dates. Looking for a whole-food, plant-based option? Blend soft medjool dates with water or use date syrup for a fiber-rich, naturally sweetened lemonade.

Organic Cane Sugar. If you want a cleaner version of classic lemonade, opt for organic cane sugar. It provides that nostalgic flavor while avoiding refined processing.

Easy + Creative Lemonade Variations to Try

Lemonade is one of the most versatile drinks around—perfect for customizing with fresh fruits, herbs, and even spices. Whether you’re making a summer party pitcher or a fun weeknight refresher, here are some flavor-packed lemonade variations to keep things exciting:

  • Strawberry Lemonade. Blend fresh or frozen strawberries with your lemon mixture for a sweet, fruity twist. Strain for a smooth texture or keep it pulpy for more body.
  • Lavender Lemonade. Infuse your simple syrup with culinary-grade dried lavender for a calming, floral flavor. Perfect for brunch, showers, or self-care sips.
  • Mint Lemonade. Add a handful of crushed mint leaves for a refreshing, spa-like feel. Serve over ice and garnish with extra mint sprigs for a cooling effect. You can even check out my Kale Lemonade!
  • Sparkling Lemonade. Swap some of the water for sparkling water or club soda to give your lemonade an effervescent boost—great for celebrations or mocktails.
  • Ginger Lemonade. Boil sliced fresh ginger in your water or syrup for a zingy, anti-inflammatory kick. Pairs well with honey or maple syrup as a sweetener.
  • Peach or Mango Lemonade. Blend peeled, ripe peaches or mangoes into your base for a tropical, velvety flavor that screams summer. Also great frozen as popsicles!
  • Blueberry Basil Lemonade. Muddle fresh blueberries and basil for a sweet-herbaceous blend that’s eye-catching and antioxidant-rich. Beautiful served in glass pitchers.
  • Spicy Jalapeño Lemonade. Add thin slices of fresh jalapeño or a dash of cayenne for a bold, unexpected twist. The sweet heat combo is addicting and surprisingly refreshing.
  • Coconut Lemonade. Mix in a bit of coconut water or coconut milk for an island-inspired lemonade that’s naturally hydrating and subtly creamy.
  • Cucumber Mint Lemonade. Blend or steep cucumber slices and mint for a cooling, detox-style lemonade that’s crisp and light—perfect for hot days or post-workout refreshment.
  • Healthy Lemonade. You can add more inflmmatory benefits or health benefits by adding things like apple cider vinegar, cayenne pepper, other citrus, etc.

Common Q + A's for Refreshing Homemade Lemonade

How to best store leftovers?

Stored in an airtight container or pitcher, fresh lemonade will stay good for up to 5–7 days. Stir well before serving, as natural separation may occur.

Can I use bottled lemon juice instead of fresh?

While it’s convenient, fresh-squeezed lemon juice is highly recommended for the best flavor. Bottled versions often contain preservatives and lack the vibrant, tangy taste of fresh lemons.

What’s the ideal lemon-to-water ratio for lemonade?

A great starting point is 1 cup fresh lemon juice to 4 cups cold water, then sweeten to taste. You can adjust this depending on how tart or mild you prefer your lemonade.

What’s the best sweetener for sugar-free lemonade?

Stevia, monk fruit, or erythritol are excellent zero-calorie options for a sugar-free version. Liquid stevia blends best without any gritty texture. Read Blog Post for great sweetener alternatives!

Can I make lemonade ahead of time for parties or events?

Yes! In fact, making it a day in advance enhances the flavor as the ingredients meld. Just keep it chilled and give it a good stir before serving.

Can I freeze homemade lemonade?

Yes, you can freeze it in ice cube trays or freezer-safe containers. Thaw in the fridge when ready to use, or blend frozen cubes for a slushy version.

How can I make lemonade fizzy?

For sparkling lemonade, replace some or all of the still water with sparkling water, club soda, or lemon-flavored seltzer right before serving.

What are the best flavor additions for lemonade?

Fresh herbs (like mint, basil, or lavender), fruits (like strawberries, blueberries, or pineapple), and spices (like ginger or cayenne) all add unique depth to lemonade. Read Blog Post for a great number of variations for lemonade!

How do I fix lemonade that’s too tart or too sweet?

If it’s too tart, add more water or sweetener gradually. If it’s too sweet, balance it with extra lemon juice or a splash of cold water.
