These Vegan Sunflower Butter + Chocolate Doughnuts are not your classic version of plain ole’ doughnuts, but are truly scrumptious in every bite. Completely fluffy, airy, and softly baked; these doughnuts create a beautiful balance of sweet and nutty flavors, all at the same time. Topped with a smooth chocolate glaze, this recipe makes for a great sweet option for those who enjoy a dairy-free, allergy-free (when used with GF flour), and vegan version of everyone’s favorite sweet treat—donuts!

We’re smack dabbed into Spring and with Summer on the horizon, I couldn’t be more excited to share another doughnut/donut recipe with you guys!
I don’t know about you, but these little treats are one of my favorite past time sweets!
Now that I make my own homemade doughnuts, I feel even better eating them (my family included), especially since I’m in control of the ingredients used and I bake mine, further eliminating the grease factor.
If you’ve been an avid reader of Orchids + Sweet Tea, then you’ll know that I’ve had my fair share of SunButter flavored recipes and have fallen in complete love with this interestingly tasty, nutty butter.
If you aren’t aware, SunButter is a great alternative to Peanut Butter, Almond Butter, or any other Nut Butter rather. Specifically awesome for those who are allergic to specific nuts, SunButter is a healthy, new way to enjoy foods!

Also, If you’ve been following this blog for some time, then you’ll know that I am a HUGE believer in using the best, most quality ingredients, which is the key to eating healthier.
Like many of my faves and go-to’s like Bob Red Mill’s, Sugar in the Raw, Enjoy Life Products, Purely Elizabeth, Justin’s, and more; SunButter is one of great quality, has no GMOs, vegan, gluten-free, and so GOOD!
Plus, SunButter is free from the top 8 allergens: peanuts, tree nuts, soy, milk, eggs, wheat, fish, and crustacean shellfish.
I definitely recommend purchasing a jar or two on their website or a major retailer like Amazon. Don’t worry–you can always see Where To Buy SunButter.
OK, so if you’re new to using SunButter, then you might be wondering how creative can you really get with such a uniquely delicious spread?
Whelp, no worries—-we’ve got you covered! Firstly, I’d recommend trying these Vegan + Gluten-Free Banana SunButter Oat Waffles. Made right in a blender, these Gluten-Free waffles are naturally sweetened, fluffy, thick, airy, and full of flavor including the nuttiness from the SunButter.
Secondly, this SunButter Chocolate Chip Quinoa Banana Bread has been highly sought after by our readers and honestly, it’s so so good!
More importantly, these Delicious Vegan Sunflower Butter Cinnamon Rolls have been one of our most popular SunButter recipes and for good reason!
SunButter + Cinnamon Rolls? Yup. Topped with a nicely whipped Maple Glaze, this recipe makes for a great sweet option for those who enjoy a dairy-free, allergy-free, and vegan version of the classic cinnamon roll dessert.
OK, so if you’ve been following my SunButter recipes, then you’ll know that there are a variety of flavors.
While I’ve had the pleasure of trying out all of the flavors and textures added, I must let you know that using a specific version for these doughnuts are simply a matter of preference.
Because SunButter has a different texture and “oiliness” than other butters, it’s so important to use the right amount AND the right version, especially for certain desserts.
However, after much testing, I’ve realized that the SunButter Creamy version worked the BEST with these doughnuts! Personally, the creamy version is just that—smooth and creamy and it mimics most popular butters (in terms of consistency) the best.
Granted, you can also use their Organic, No-Sugar Added, or Natural versions. In addition, you can also use their Natural Crunch version, if you’re into enjoying a little crunch in every bite.
Lastly, because of SunButter’s “oil” content from the Sunflower seeds, using less works best for any dough’s or batter’s fluffiness and airiness.
Therefore, I chose to use 2 Tbsps to still achieve this great nutty flavor and softness in every bite without compromising the light, airy feel of the doughnuts.
Now, let’s dig right into this recipe–-shall we?
Preheat oven to 400 degrees Fahrenheit and lightly dress your doughnut/donut baking pan wells with grapeseed oil using a paper towel or pastry brush.
In a medium bowl, sift together the all-purpose flour, pure cane sugar, baking powder, baking soda, and sea salt.
In a separate mixing bowl, add the Almond milk, SunButter, grapeseed oil, and vanilla extract.
Next, add the wet ingredients in with the dry ingredients and using a rubber spatula, stir until well combined. **DO NOT OVER-MIX!**
Spoon the donut batter into a pipping bag and pipe it into prepared donut pan wells.
Bake donuts for 10-12 minutes or until fluffy and light golden brown or until a toothpick comes out clean.
Remove from oven and then let them cool for 5 minutes before turning them out onto a cooling rack so that they can continue to cool completely.
To Make Chocolate Glaze:
In a small pot on low heat, add chocolate chips and milk, whisking constantly until full melted and smooth. Once melted, remove from heat.
Whisk together the powdered sugar and melted chocolate (while hot) until smooth and consistency is met. **NOTE: After mixing, you may need to add additional milk (1 Tbsp at a time) for it to become thinner and glaze -like. Just ensure that you continue whisking until glaze runs ‘slowly’ off the whisk when slightly lifted. This means that consistency is perfect.**
Next, dip donut in the prepared Chocolate Glaze and set back onto cooling rack so that glaze hardens a bit. Repeat until all donuts are glazed.
Sprinkle with Sunflower seeds, if desired.
