How To Make Creamy Herb Roasted Salmon Dip

To make this roasted salmon dip recipe, start by seasoning and roasting your salmon until it’s perfectly flaky, then shred it into chunks (see my post of tips for cooking salmon). Mix it up with vegan mayo, lemon juice, Dijon, fresh herbs, shallots, and spices until creamy + scoopable. That’s it! Serve with crackers, veggies, or whatever you love to dip.

Ingredients

HERB ROASTED SALMON:

  • Salmon. I like to use wild-caught Sockeye salmon for a tastier flavor.
  • Extra virgin olive oil. Feel free to use your favorite high-quality EVOO. My fave tried and trusted brand is California Olive Ranch.
  • On Everything All-Purpose Blend. You can purchase my On Everything All-Purpose Blend for authentic flavor or make your own blend (see below)
  • Smoked paprika. This adds a nice smoky element.
  • Garlic cloves. Crushed.
  • Thyme. Fresh sprigs are best.

DIP:

  • Shredded herb-roasted salmon.
  • Shallot. Diced (You can substitute with sweet yellow or white onion or red onion)
  • Roasted garlic coves. Minced (You'll be using the garlic from the roasted salmon)
  • Vegan mayonnaise. I use the brand Follow Your Heart--- It is super creamy and smooth but feel free to add your fave if you prefer. You can also use regular mayo if you prefer.
  • Lemon. Freshly-squeezed.
  • Djion mustard. This adds a nice level of tang.
  • Dill. Fresh + chopped.
  • Parsley. Also chopped + fresh.
  • Black pepper.
  • Garlic powder.
  • Sea salt. For taste.

How To Make A Homemade All-Purpose Blend

Just toss all your ingredients into a bowl and give it a good mix until everything’s nicely combined. It’s that easy!

  • 1 teaspoon sea salt
  • 1 teaspoon black pepper
  • 1 teaspoon garlic powder
  • 1 teaspoon dried oregano
  • 1 teaspoon dried thyme
  • 1 teaspoon dried parsley

Here, I’ve curated a list of baking essentials that I use to achieve my favorite baked goods, especially with this Roasted Salmon Dip recipe. Everything from my fave pots, wooden spoons, parchment paper, and more. SEE THEM HERE!

Sockeye vs Atlantic Salmon

The main difference between the two: Wild sockeye salmon develop their robust qualities in a vast marine ecosystem, swimming thousands of miles over a lifetime in an epic hunt for food. This is in stark contrast to farm-raised Atlantic salmon, who are typically confined to a net pen — often situated in polluted, coastal waters — where they’re fed engineered pellets that can never truly replace a wild diet.

Of course, the other difference is in their taste: Atlantic salmon is less tasteful than Sockeye salmon and doesn't pack as much as a punch. Overall, Sockeye has more of a crab-like taste to it and is often considered firm in texture.

Can Sockeye Salmon Be Cooked From Frozen?

Yes! You can actually put your wild salmon right into the oven from the freezer. Add about 8-10 minutes to the cooking time to account for the cold temperature of the fish. I also like to loosely cover the salmon when baking from frozen, tenting it with foil to trap the moisture as it cooks a little longer.

How To Shop For Fresh Sockeye Salmon

I have a little secret for you about seafood: It is almost always frozen immediately after being caught. Freezing fish either right on the fishing boat or at the docks helps kill bacteria and prevent the delicate fish from spoilage. Even the "fresh" fish in the grocery store has usually been frozen and then thawed. So, unless you are lucky enough to live near a sockeye salmon breeding ground, you should skip the "fresh" fish section in your grocery store and go straight to the freezer section for your fish. The frozen sockeye salmon in the grocery store will cost less and it will be the same, high quality.

  • Fresh veggies like cucumbers, carrots, or bell peppers
  • Garlic bread or brioche toast
  • Bagel chips or pretzel thins
  • Dolloped onto baked potatoes or grain bowls for a flavor boost

More Topping Ideas For This Creamy Salmon Dip

Here are some fun and flavorful topping ideas to take your creamy salmon dip to the next level:

  • Extra fresh dill or parsley for a pop of green
  • Cracked black pepper or smoked paprika for a kick
  • A drizzle of olive oil or hot honey for contrast
  • Capers for a salty, briny bite
  • Chopped chives or green onions for freshness
  • Lemon zest for extra zing
  • Crispy shallots or fried garlic for crunch
  • Pickled red onions for tang and color
  • A sprinkle of everything bagel seasoning for texture

Perfect for customizing your dip based on your mood or what’s in the fridge!

Creamy Herb Roasted Salmon Dip Q + A's

How to store?

Leftovers can be refrigerated in an airtight container for up to 3-4 days.

How to reheat?

To reheat, salmon dip, it's generally best to avoid microwaving and instead opt for gentle heating methods to prevent the salmon from becoming dry and fishy. A low heated oven at a low temperature (300°F) or a low heat skillet can be effective. If you prefer a quick reheat, you can try a small amount of time in the microwave with a damp paper towel to help retain moisture.

Is this salmon dip recipe gluten-free?

To ensure that this dip is entirely GF-friendly, be sure to substitute the bread with a gluten-free version and ensure that the vegan mayo + dijon mustard are GF-friendly as well.

Can I use regular mayo instead of vegan mayo?

Absolutely! If you’re not dairy-free or vegan, regular mayo works just as well. Use whatever you have on hand or prefer.
