Soft Honey Butter Dinner Rolls Ingredients

The ingredients are simple, and you probably already have most of them in your pantry.

DINNER ROLLS:

  • Organic All-purpose flour. If you'd like, you can substitute about ½ cup of flour with bread flour for a more "brioche-like" texture.
  • Rapid rise yeast. You'll need one packet.
  • Water. Make sure its WARM.
  • Sweetener. I find raw organic honey or cane sugar to have the best flavor and do the trick with activating the yeast. Nate's Organic is a great option for honey!
  • Sea salt.
  • Almond milk. At room temp. (You can also use regular dairy milk, if preferred!)
  • Large egg. At room temp.
  • Unsalted butter. Melted + COOLED
  • Egg wash. That's 1 egg + 1 tablespoon of milk whisked together.

GARNISH:

  • Raw honey
  • Unsalted butter

How To Make Ultra Soft Honey Butter Dinner Rolls

I’ve been making dinner rolls for what feels like forever, and while I’ve had my share of disastrous batches, I’ve learned a few tips and tricks to make them perfect every time:

TO MAKE THE DOUGH:

  • Combine yeast and sugar in the bowl of an electric mixer and slowly pour in warm water while stirring frequently. Allow 10 minutes for the mixture to sit and for the yeast to activate.
  • Add in the room temperature milk and warm butter to the yeast mixture and whisk until well combined. Add in the egg, whisking to incorporate.
  • In a large bowl, whisk together the all-purpose flour and sea salt and add them to the wet ingredients and mix on low-speed until well combined and everything begins to form into a dough-like consistency, about 2-3 minutes.
  • Change “Mixer head” to kneading accessory and knead dough for 5-10 minutes on high speed until dough ball becomes smooth and elastic and dough springs back when lightly pressed together with 2 fingers. NOTE: If dough is still too sticky, add 1 tablespoon of flour at a time until texture is achieved!
  • Lightly grease a large bowl with a small amount of olive oil and place the dough ball in the bowl, tossing it around until coated. Cover with plastic wrap (or a towel) and let sit for 1 hour, allowing the dough to rise and double in size.

SHAPE + RISE AGAIN:

  • Preheat the oven to 350 degrees Fahrenheit and grease a 9x13 inch baking pan.
  • Pinch parts of the dough and roll each it into a dough ball and line it inside the baking pan side by side, leaving a bit of space in between.
  • Then place plastic wrap (or a towel) over the baking dish and let the rolls rise again for another 20-30 minutes.

BAKE THE ROLLS:

  • Once the rolls have doubled in size (once again) or have gotten significantly larger, brush the tops of the rolls with the egg wash and then bake them for approximately 30-35 minutes or until fluffy and golden brown.

TO MAKE THE GARNISH:

  • In a saucepan over medium-high heat, add the butter and honey, mixing until the butter has melted and everything is combined. Let it bubble for 1 minute or so. Remove from heat.
  • Remove the rolls from oven and brush the tops with warm honey-butter mixture.
  • Serve immediately while warm.

What To Serve With Honey Butter Dinner Rolls

These Honey Butter Dinner Rolls are delicious on their own, but they’re perfect for the holidays or big family dinners. Fresh and warm out of the oven, they make the best side ever!

Can I Make Honey Butter Dinner Rolls Overnight?

Yes! If you don’t want to make your dinner rolls on the same day, you can simply follow all steps (including the initial 1+ hour rise) and after pinching out + shaping together the rolls and placing them into your baking pan, just cover them tightly (using foil paper of plastic wrap) and refrigerate them overnight or for 8-12 hours instead. The following day, remove from refrigerator and keeping them covered, let dinner rolls rise at room temp 1 to 1 ½ hours.

Soft Honey Butter Dinner Rolls Q + A's

How to Best Store?

Leftovers can be kept fresh at room temperature when tightly wrapped or sealed for up to 1 week. Fresh for up to 3 days in the Refrigerator. Baked and cooled rolls can be frozen up to 1 month when stored in a freezer-safe bag.

RAPID (INSTANT) RISE YEAST VS. ACTIVE DRY YEAST

If you’re not using the Rapid Rise Yeast for this recipe, please know that the rise time will be twice as long (about 3 hours) since regular Active Yeast doesn’t work as quickly.

Can I Make Vegan Dinner Rolls?

Yes! To make these dinner rolls vegan, simply omit the eggs, the honey with maple syrup, and butter with vegan butter.

What Can I Substitute for Honey?

If you want a different sweetener, maple syrup or agave syrup works well as a substitute for honey.

How to Freeze Leftovers?

Once they've finished baking, let them cool completely and then wrap them tightly in aluminum foil. Place the foil-wrapped rolls in a freezer bag or storage container and freeze for up to 1 month------which is usually when bread starts to develop frost and freezer burn.

  1. Hi Shanika,
I stumbled upon your page after shamefully googling “dinner ideas for kids” upon realizing that I have no clue what to make my child and praying something with the ingredients I have in the house would lead me somewhere. Well, it led me to your post with 30 ideas for kids (or something like that) and after firstly being like “this is the luckiest child in the world” I was like, wait—Shanika; is this woman black? I scrolled up and read your entire about section and I was blown away by your vulnerability, authenticity, and triumph. There wasn’t a comment section on that page so I came to your latest post hoping you’ll see it just to reach out and say thank you. Your testimony is so encouraging and inspiring. I just started my journey towards becoming… well actually, I’m just going to leave it in Michelle obamas words—becoming. I’m not totally sure what, but I know I’m working towards something.
I hope this message doesn’t sound too erratic. Just wanted to acknowledge you and express my gratitude.
    -Simone 🙂

    • Hi Simone! WOW! This comment truly blessed me! Thanks so much for this! I'm so honored to be able to inspire! And I love that you found my Kids recipe roundup! I totally understand how hard it is to find great meals for your kid that they'll enjoy! My son is the same way! I pray that your journey to becoming is one of great breakthrough and empowerment! Blessings to you! 🙂
