This decadent Chocolate Oreo Skillet Brownie is an over-the-top delicious treat for the entire family that happens to be completely dairy-free + vegan. Besides---who doesn't love an excuse to indulge in a few Oreo cookies, right? Exactly! Gluten-free option available.
This skillet chocolate Oreo brownie has to be one of my greatest highlights lately. I'm not a huge chocolate fan, BUT this is one of those chocolate-y desserts that draws me in every time.
Brownie recipes are not exactly rocket science, however, they often require eggs to achieve that fudgy texture. Instead, my extra-fudgy brownies use vegan flaxseed eggs made with flaxseed meal and warm water. It keeps these brownies moist and completely plant-based!
No More Brownie Mix!
A box of brownies is an easy go-to for a quick dessert. Did you know that you likely already have the ingredients found inside boxed brownies right in the pantry? And honestly, the ingredients you currently have are likely to be of higher quality than those found in the box.
Boxed brownie mix generally consists of flour, baking powder or soda, and cocoa powder. These simple ingredients for this Chocolate Oreo Skillet Brownie is cheaper when bought and used individually. Even the most novice bakers likely have each of these ingredients in the cupboard. If not, that’s okay! It is so easy to learn how to make homemade versions of boxed baked goods.
When it comes to the ingredients in this brownie recipe --- high-quality ingredients is key. For example, look for fair-trade cocoa powder to ensure it is coming from a company that ensures the safety of its workers.
Look for high-quality flour since it is one of the main ingredients of this dish. Also, be sure to change out your baking powder and baking soda before their expiration dates. Baking powder can lose its lifting capabilities over time, so change it out at least once per year.
here’s what you need to make this easy but incredible Chocolate Oreo Skillet Brownie:
All-purpose flour. I like organic flour from Bob’s Red Mill or King Arthur.
Cocoapowder. Choose organic natural cocoa powder if you can.
Brown sugar. Likewise, I like organic sugar to make sure it’s fully vegan.
Baking powder. this helps the brownies rise.
Cinnamon. You can make your own or use store-bought pumpkin spice.
Flax eggs. Make these with flaxseed meal and water to help your egg-free brownies stay together.
Almond milk. Feel free to use any kind of plant-based milk you like.
Chopped vegan chocolate. Vegan chocolate chips also work.
Oreo cookies. Make sure to use the GF version to make this gluten-free friendly.
Serving Skillet Brownies
You’ll want to dig into this skillet when it’s fresh out of the oven. Add crumbled Ore cookies and a scoop of dairy-free vanilla ice cream if you like to cut through some of the rich, decadent chocolate.
Can I Make Gluten Free Vegan Skillet Brownies?
Yes! To make this recipe gluten-free, simply substitute the all-purpose flour with gluten-free 1-1 all-purpose, like Bob’s Red Mill.
Also, reduce the almond milk in the recipe to ⅓ cup and the vegan butter to ⅓ cup.
Preheat the oven to 350 degrees Fahrenheit and grease a 10-inch cast iron skillet (oven-safe) with vegan butter.
Begin by adding the flaxseed meal + water to a small bowl, stirring until combined and letting it sit for 5-10 minutes. Set aside.
In a large bowl, add the melted butter and sugar together, whisking until combined.
Add in the flaxseed meal mixture, milk, and vanilla, whisking to combine.
Now, add in flour, cocoa powder, cinnamon, salt, and baking powder, mixing everything together a spatula or wooden spoon, until fully combined. Fold in the chopped chocolate and Oreo cookies. **NOTE: Batter will be thick, that's OK**
Scoop the batter into the prepared skillet and evenly spread it in. Sprinkle a few more chopped Oreo cookies and vegan chocolate over the top of batter, lightly pressing them in.
Bake for 35-40 minutes or until the center comes out "mostly clean".
Once done, remove from oven and let cool for about 5-10 minutes before scooping a few spoonfuls of brownie and topping it with your favorite dairy-free ice cream.
BUTTER VS. OIL: If preferred, you can always substitute the vegan butter with coconut oil, canola oil, or vegetable oil.
CHOCOLATE: You can substitute chopped chocolate with vegan chocolate chips, if desired as well.
REGULAR BROWNIES: For a twist----you can turn this skillet brownie into traditional brownies by using the same ingredients, but following the steps from my Easy Extra Fudgy Vegan Brownies recipe in terms of the baking pan, etc.
