Healthy Cashew Date Morning Smoothie

The morning has such a big impact on the rest of my day. Whether I have a hectic schedule or a nice, calm break in my workflow, I find that taking a bit of time to set myself into a positive mindset goes a long way.

It can be easy to ignore the little things. Often, we are so rushed that we don’t take the time to practice small acts of self-care.

These little moments of compassion for ourselves matter though. Not only do they make you joyful, but they also send a message to your mind that you care about yourself. That can have a lasting impact on your well-being.

One of my favorite ways to practice self-care is to make sure I make myself a nice breakfast. This healthy date smoothie is among my top go-to recipes.

This Date Smoothie is Absolutely Delicious

While I love a nice blueberry smoothie, most of us have had plenty of those. It’s important to switch things up so you can continue to enjoy eating healthily.

This date smoothie is a fantastic alternative to more traditional fruit smoothies.

The dates give this morning shake a deep, caramel-like sweetness that adds a complexity you don’t normally get from smoothies.

Using cashews provides the rich, luxurious creaminess of a milkshake while keeping this recipe healthy and entirely vegan.

The addition of cinnamon, vanilla, and nutmeg add just the right amount of warmth, resulting in a balanced, healthy date smoothie that comes together in minutes.

Best of all, it’s entirely customizable. You can make this date smoothie with or without bananas, substitute the cashews for almonds, or add more spices to the mix. It’s easy to have fun and experiment!

What Makes This Date Smoothie So Healthy?

This date smoothie recipe is packed with health-promoting foods that will keep you full and fuel you throughout the day.

First up, we have the dates themselves

Dates are naturally very high in fiber. Dietary fiber plays an important role in digestion and has been shown to promote heart health when eaten regularly.

Fiber also helps regulate your blood sugar levels. This means you won’t experience the mid-morning energy crash many of us have grown used to.

What’s more, dates are full of powerful antioxidants. Antioxidants are important phytochemicals that combat inflammation in the body.

This date smoothie even promotes bone health! Thanks to the many minerals that naturally occur in dates, this smoothie might be the most delicious way to keep your bones strong.

Do I Need to Soak the Cashews and Dates?

Yes! To best soak cashews, add 1 cup of cashews to a bowl or measuring cup and cover with cold water, sealing the top with plastic wrap and leaving it out (at room temp.) overnight. When ready to use, drain and rinse. If not able to soak overnight, simply cover cashews with boiling water and let sit for 30 minutes, drain, + rinse.

In addition, to soak the dates----add dates to a small bowl with boiling water for 10 minutes or so. This softens it and hydrates them which will result in plumper and more manageable dates for the "break down" during the blending process.

How to Make Healthy Cashew Date Morning Smoothie

This cashew date smoothie as I’ve mentioned before is super easy to whip together and doesn’t require anything special when it comes to ingredients. All you need to whip up this simple pick me up smoothie is:

  • Cashews. I soak these overnight, but for a quick soak, simply add them to boiling water for at least 30 minutes.
  • Medjool date. A great natural sweetener with a ton of benefits.
  • Banana. Adds great thickness and works as a sweetener as well.
  • Rolled oats. I use gluten-free oats. You can use GF-certified oats or regular rolled oats.
  • Vegan Butter. I recommend melting your vegan butter for baking.
  • Vanilla. This adds a nice vanilla flavor.
  • Spices. I like to add cinnamon and nutmeg for a warm spice flavor.

Next, we have the bananas

It’s common knowledge that bananas are high in potassium, but did you know this important mineral helps regulate your blood pressure

Potassium acts as a counterbalance to sodium, which means that it can help people with hypertension maintain healthy blood pressure.

Like dates, bananas are also high in both fiber and antioxidants, making them the perfect addition to this delicious date smoothie.

They’re also high in vitamin C, which plays an important role in your immune function.

And finally, the cashews

Few foods are as high in copper as cashews. Copper plays an important role in creating and maintaining the connective tissue in our bodies.

This soft, creamy tree nut provides 622 micrograms per ounce, making it a very effective way to get your daily dose of copper and keep your joints and cartilage happy.

Cashews are also high in healthy, unsaturated fat. These healthy fats not only taste delicious but they’ve been shown to reduce hunger, helping you maintain a healthy caloric intake.

They round out the healthy ingredients and add the perfect creaminess to this incredible date smoothie.

Self-Care Has Never Tasted So Sweet

Prioritizing yourself and your well-being can feel overwhelming. We’re often so busy we forget to slow down and celebrate ourselves.

It doesn’t have to be that way though. You can practice self-care by simply giving yourself small moments of joy throughout the day.

Making this nourishing, delicious date smoothie is a quick and easy way to practice kindness towards yourself. Simply making yourself a breakfast you love can make your entire day brighter and more fulfilling.

Make this recipe a part of your morning. You deserve it.

How to Store Date Smoothie

Store any leftovers in the refrigerator, tightly sealed or in a covered mason jar, ensuring that you drink it within the same day for best taste and consistency.

Total Time: 5 minutes

  • 1 ⅓ cups cashews, soaked overnight (See Notes!)
  • 8 Medjool dates, pitted + soaked (See Notes!)

  • cup Rolled oats, Gluten-Free (I use Bob's Red Mill)

Topping:

  • To serve, add shake to prepared glass(es) and top with CocoWhip and chopped chocolate, if desired.
  • Sip and enjoy!

Tips & Tricks

  • STORAGE: Store any leftovers in the refrigerator, tightly sealed or in a covered mason jar, ensuring that you drink it within the same day for best taste and consistency.
  • SOAKED CASHEWS: To best soak cashews, add 1 cup of cashews to a bowl or measuring cup and cover with cold water, sealing the top with plastic wrap and leaving it out (at room temp.) overnight. When ready to use, drain and rinse. If not able to soak overnight, simply cover cashews with boiling water and let sit for 30 minutes, drain, + rinse.
  • DATES: To soak the dates----add dates to a small bowl with boiling water for 10 minutes or so. This softens it and hydrates them which will result in plumper and more manageable dates for the "break down" during the blending process.
  • WHAT PLANT-BASED MILKS ARE GOOD FOR THIS RECIPE?My go-to plant-based milk is Almond milk from Califia Farms. However, you can always use your fave or one of the following: coconut milk, oat milk (froths/foams VERY WELL), flax milk, etc.
  • ADDITIONAL OPTIONS: To create a kick of flavor or add nutrients to this shake, you can add any of the following: turmeric (about ¼ tsp), your favorite nut butter, chia seeds, flaxseed meal, cacao powder (about 1 Tbsp), or an additional sweetener such as Agave or Maple syrup.
