What Is Garlic Parmesan Sauce?

Garlic Parmesan sauce is like a flavor-packed magic wand in the kitchen! It's a creamy blend of butter, garlic, Parmesan cheese, cream, liquid stock, and herbs that adds so much richness to any dish. Whether you're dipping, drizzling, or smothering, it elevates the flavor game of everything from pasta to veggies to chicken. Originally, it was created as a wing sauce from an American Restaurant called Buffalo Wild Wings.

This sauce is so versatile! You can dip the Best Garlic Parmesan Chicken Wings for double the parm-hit or spread it on pizza with my quick Easy Gluten-Free Pizza Crust. It's also perfect for dunking Vegan Garlic Naan Bread into! Trust me, once you taste it, you'll want to put this sauce on EVERYTHING!

How To Make Easy Garlic Parmesan Sauce

You won't find anything complicated in this amazing garlic parmesan sauce recipe. Chances are, you've got most of these ingredients hanging out in your kitchen already! Check out the recipe card at the end of the post for exact measurements. You'll be able to whip this together in a few easy steps:

  • Melt the Butter: Using a nice non-stick skillet, you'll start by melting the butter.
  • Sauté Garlic and add Italian Seasoning: Then you'll add the minced garlic and sauté for a bit before adding the Italian seasoning and salt.
  • Whisk in the Flour: Add the flour and whisk it together with the garlic and seasoning to form a paste.
  • Stir in the Stock + Heavy Cream: Now you add in your liquids and whisk until smooth and no lumps are visible.
  • Simmer to Thicken: Reduce the heat and let it simmer for a few minutes, whisking occasionally.
  • Add in the Parmesan Cheese: Now stir in the grated parmesan cheese until combined and the sauce thickens more.
  • Finish the sauce: Once thickened fully, remove from heat and enjoy!

Ingredients

SAUCE:

  • Butter. Adds a rich buttery flavor. Use unsalted butter to control the flavor. For a dairy-free version, substitute with vegan butter.
  • Garlic cloves. Use fresh minced garlic.
  • Heavy cream. I recommend organic–always! I use Organic Valley. Of course, for a dairy-free option, just use full-fat coconut cream/milk.
  • Freshly-grated parmesan cheese. I love to freshly grate my cheese, however, you can use your favorite shredded brand---quality does matter! For a dairy-free option, So Delicious Dairy-Free or Violife cheese shreds taste great.
  • Liquid stock. I love using either low-sodium chicken or vegetable stock to create a nice creamy base. More stock creates a thinner consistency if preferred.
  • Italian seasoning. This rounds out the flavors and packs a nice punch of herbs in this sauce. You can create your own easy homemade blend using my Italian Seasoning Mix recipe.
  • Flour. This is a thickening agent that gives the sauce it's "body". You can sub with GF flour, cornstarch, arrowroot, tapioca flour, etc.

Easy Garlic Parmesan Sauce Q + A's

How to store leftovers?

You can store leftovers in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to a week.

How do I reheat Easy Garlic Parmesan Sauce?

To reheat, gently warm the sauce on the stovetop over low heat, stirring frequently to maintain its creamy texture. You can also use short bursts in the microwave, stirring in between, until it reaches your desired temperature. Avoid high heat to prevent separation or curdling.

Why is my sauce not creamy?

If your sauce is not velvety smooth it could be because your ingredients don't have as high of fat content to them. Make sure that you're using high-quality ingredients and whisking everything frequently until smooth.

Can I make more?

Yes! This recipe makes enough for about 2 cups of sauce, however, for more or a larger batch simply double or triple the ingredients.

How to make it dairy-free?

So easy! To make this sauce dairy-free, simply use vegan butter instead of the regular butter. Then swap the cream with full-fat coconut milk or coconut cream. And use your favorite dairy-free shredded cheese, dairy-free parmesan, or nutritional yeast instead of parmesan cheese.
