Dairy-Free Salted Caramel Chunky Milkshake

Homemade shakes are incredibly easy, yet have such amazing flavor payoff. Make your next milkshake at home with this Dairy-Free Salted Caramel Chunky Milkshake, made with plant-based ingredients! This shake is chocolatey, creamy, and has just the right amount of homemade caramel sauce drizzled over the top.

Summer is coming to a close, so now is the time to make milkshakes. While you can absolutely make milkshakes in the winter, they taste more refreshing in the heat of summer. No other milkshakes are as good as my Salted Caramel Chunky Milkshake, made with dairy-free ice cream!

This milkshake has a few essential elements. First, the shake itself is made with vegan ice cream, chocolate, almond milk, and vanilla. Then, I top it off with a homemade caramel sauce also using vegan ingredients! 

You can keep this caramel sauce in the fridge for up to 2 weeks. Use it for anything from sundaes, pancakes, waffles, parfaits, cakes, cookies, or coffee. This sauce adds the perfect caramelized sweetness to any dish! But, it is especially good on these milkshakes!

Making a Milkshake at Home

While milkshakes seem fancy when they're from a creamery, they are so easy to make yourself. All you need is a high-powered blender and some of your favorite ingredients.

All milkshakes begin with ice cream. You can make the ice cream yourself or use your favorite store-bought variety. Make sure to use a type of ice cream that you really enjoy, as it is the base for the milkshake.

Next, you'll need to decide on flavorings. If you want additional elements, add them here. You can add chocolate, vanilla extract, fruit, candy, flavored syrups, or anything else you enjoy.

Finally, you will need some milk to loosen the milkshake. You don't want the milkshake too thick, it should be sippable with a straw. Use cow's milk or your favorite plant-based milk.

Blend up the shake and serve it immediately to avoid melting. With a nice blender, you can make a milkshake with the perfect consistency.

Ingredients in Salted Caramel Chunky Milkshake

You only need a few easy ingredients to make this milkshake!

  • 3 cups salted caramel-flavored dairy-free ice cream
  • 1 cup almond milk
  • a teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 1 cup chopped semi-sweet vegan chocolate
  • Pinch of finely-ground sea salt
    For the Homemade Caramel Sauce:
  • 1 cup organic brown sugar
  • 6 tablespoons vegan butter
  • ½ cup full-fat coconut milk from a can
  • Pinch of finely-ground sea salt
    Optional Topping:
  • Coconut whipped cream, homemade or store-bought

Salted Caramel Chunky Milkshake

How to Make Salted Caramel Chunky Milkshake

  • Heat the brown sugar in a medium skillet over medium-high heat and stir constantly using a rubber spatula until clumps are formed. Add butter and continue to stir until everything has melted and become a dark 'amber-like color. Continue to stir consistently until fully melted and bubbly, about 2-3 minutes.
  • Now, slowly whisk in the coconut milk and continue stirring until well incorporated and the sauce has fully thickened. Remove from heat and allow to cool slightly before using. Set aside.

Make the Milkshake:

  • Add the dairy-free ice cream, milk, and vanilla to a high-powered blender and blend on medium-high speed, until smooth, about 1-2 minutes. 
  • Once milkshake consistency is met, pour milkshake into a tall glass(es), and top each milkshake with coconut whipped cream, caramel sauce, and chopped vegan chocolate.
  • Add a straw and sip away and enjoy!

This fabulous Salted Caramel Chunky Milkshake is a real sweet treat. Incredibly velvety, smothered with caramel sauce, and little bits of chocolate chunks, this recipe is every bit of "heaven in a glass".  Super easy to make and can be whipped together in less than 10 minutes.

Ingredients

MILKSHAKE:

  • 3 cups salted caramel flavored dairy-free ice cream
  • 1 cup Almond milk (You can use your favorite plant-based milk)

Tips & Tricks

  • HOMEMADE COCONUT WHIPPED CREAM: In the bowl of an electric mixer on medium-high speed, whip the full-fat coconut milk (3-4 cups), using the whisk attachment for 4-5 minutes, until fluffy peaks begin to form. **NOTE: When it begins to thicken after the first 2-3 minutes, gradually add in 1 tablespoon vanilla extract and a pinch of sea salt.** Once fully fluffy, remove from mixer bowl and continue recipe. 
  • STORAGE (CARAMEL SAUCE): Leftover caramel sauce can be stored in a tightly sealed mason jar for up to two weeks. When ready to use, simply reheat sauce in the microwave at 15 second intervals until softened and at room temp.
