Ingredients

CARAMEL SAUCE:

  • 1 cup organic brown sugar
  • 6 Tbsps unsalted butter
  • ½ cup organic heavy cream

FILLING:

  • 4 medium Honeycrisp apples, sliced (See Notes!)
  • 2 medium organic Bartlett pears, sliced
  • ½ cup organic brown sugar
  • 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
  • ½ teaspoon ground nutmeg
  • Pinch of ground allspice
  • 2 tsps vanilla extract
  • ½ cup caramel sauce, homemade or store-bought

TOPPING:

  • ½ cup organic all-purpose flour
  • cup organic rolled oats
  • ¾ cup organic brown sugar
  • 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
  • 4 Tbsps unsalted butter, partially melted

GARNISH:

  • Drizzle of caramel sauce, homemade or store-bought

Instructions

TO MAKE THE CARAMEL SAUCE:

  • In a medium (10-inch) skillet over medium-high heat, heat the brown sugar and stir constantly using a rubber spatula until clumps are formed. Add the butter and continue to stir until everything has melted and become a dark 'amber-like' color. Continue to stir consistently until fully melted and bubbly, about 2-3 minutes.
  • Now, slowly whisk in the heavy cream and continue to whisk until combined and the sauce has fully thickened. Remove from heat and allow to cool slightly before using.

TO MAKE THE FILLING:

  • In a large bowl, add the sliced apples, sliced pears, brown sugar, cinnamon, nutmeg, allspice, vanilla, and caramel sauce, stirring everything together until combined and the apples + pears are completely coated.

TO MAKE THE TOPPING:

  • In a bowl, add the flour, oats, brown sugar, and cinnamon, stirring until combined. Add the partially melted butter and using a spatula, mix until combined and 'crumbly-like'.

ASSEMBLE + BAKE:

  • Preheat your oven to 375 degrees Fahrenheit and prepare an oven-safe medium 10-inch deep skillet by greasing it lightly with butter.
  • Spoon the coated apples + pears into the bottom of your prepared skillet and top with topping mixture. Bake for about 35-40 minutes or until apple-pear filling becomes bubbly and topping is golden brown.
  • Once fully baked, remove from oven and let it cool for 5 minutes or so. Serve warm and enjoy with a scoop of your favorite ice cream or Coolwhip! and drizzle with remaining caramel sauce.
  • Bon Appetit!

Notes

  • STORAGE: Best if served on the same day of making crisp. If made ahead of time (a few hours before serving), simply re-warm in the oven at 375 degrees Fahrenheit. Leftovers should be stored in an air-tight container in the refrigerator for 1-2 days.
  • STORAGE (CARAMEL SAUCE): Leftover caramel sauce can be stored in a tightly sealed mason jar for up to two weeks. When ready to use, simply reheat sauce in the microwave at 15 second intervals until softened and at room temp.
  • APPLES: Best apples to use for this crisp are: Granny Smith, Gala, Honeycrisp, Fuji, etc.
  • GLUTEN-FREE OPTION: To make this crisp GF, simply substitute the flour with GF All-Purpose flour or 1-to-1 GF Baking Flour, which Bob's Red Mill has a great one! Ensure that other ingredients are GF-friendly (i.e. heavy cream, etc.). Also, ensure that the rolled oats are certified-GF.
