If you’re already a “Naturalista” as they call it OR you’re thinking of leaping into the Natural Hair world, then this post is for you! It’s been awhile since I’ve posted about my natural hair journey and I often get questions about the products I use, what it’s like being natural, how long does it take for your hair to grow–you name it, I’ve been asked! So, I’ve decided to share a bit of my journey with you thus far and I hope that it helps you get your concerns addressed or at least helps you make a decision!
Ready, Set, Go….
First things first, please don’t go down the Natural Hair route if you believe that it’ll be EASIER! IT’s NOT! It definitely requires a lot of patience, work, & commitment throughout the entire process. Not at all bad things, BUT definitely not things to take lightly! I’ve been a natural for almost 5 years now & it’s been a crazy rollercoaster! I’ve done the BIG CHOP about a million times out of frustration from doing the natural thing & then going back to relaxed hair and then going back to natural again! Haha! I know! But ladies, please know that you will feel this way at times. Especially if you’ve had to start OVER again like me due to Postpartum shedding & texture changes!
Maybe because your hair may seem like it’s not growing quick enough. Keep in mind that it may grow about 1 inch per month (depending on your genetics, diet, hair care, etc.). Not a lot, I know! BUT it IS growing. It just takes time, especially when you’ve started from SCRATCH by doing the big chop! I see why many women divert from going through this by TRANSITIONING and chopping off the relaxed ends along the way! But it’s whatever works for you! Secondly, you may get frustrated with the level of care that it takes DAILY. I mean there’s the LOC method (which means Liquid. Oil. then Cream) in order to keep your hair moisturized and lock it all in throughout the day; then there’s no wearing harsh materials on your hair and sleeping with a silk bonnet or silk pillow case (to keep your hair from drying out); then there’s the healthy diet that in fact affects the way your hair grows and its healthy state; and did I forget the washing and co-washing, deep conditioning, figuring out which natural hair products works for your hair, and understanding the way your hair works in and of itself!?
WOAH, SOUNDS MASSIVE, RIGHT?
But it’s OK ladies!
Being a natural is awesome! It requires work, BUT it also conveys your freedom to what the world says you should look like, it shows strength & confidence in loving YOU and the YOU that comes without all of the extra stuff that alters who YOU are, and it conveys uniqueness because every Naturalista is unique + beautiful in her own way!
And if you’re still on the fence…..GO FOR IT! Try it out! Fail at it! Succeed at it! Heck, it’s only H A I R! You can wrap it up in a wig, weave, go bald, grow it back, whatever you choose! HaHa!
Anyway, along the way you’ll figure it all out and learn what works for you and what doesn’t. As for me, I LOVE Mielle Organics products! There are just SO MANY products out there (Most of which aren’t really NATURAL–Please be sure to ALWAYS check the ingredients Ladies!). Mielle Organics hair products are VERY Natural and mostly organic and it works for all hair types! I mean I LOVE it so much that I use it in my son’s hair (Yes, they have a Tinys + Tots line for Kids now!). The products are LIGHT, Smell amazing, truly moisturizes you hair, and is VERY affordable!

Trust me, I’ve tried them ALL! Haha!
But seriously, this line is one of my definite Go-To’s and well trusted! Besides Mielle Organics, I like Shea Moisture a bit too! Not all of their products, BUT some work fine! One thing you’ll learn on this journey is that you WILL SPEND MONEY trying different products! I don’t even know how much I’ve spent, BUT I know it was a lot since I’ve become a natural back in 2011. Luckily, so many YouTubers and Bloggers give their suggestion on top products now, SO you have a better guide than I did before being natural became P O P U L A R!
However, you can go down the route of simply using all fully organic items such as Shea butter, olive oil, coconut oil, jojoba oil, Mayo, Eggs, Avocado, Honey, Banana, etc. There are a ton of different ingredients that you can use (that are in your kitchen) that will make your hair grow healthy & strong. I use to do this MORE often BUT I’ve gotten a bit lazy & busy with a little one & all the other stuff I’m juggling! BUT please Make Google your BFF this instance! Again, it’s just about what works for you!
But once you do find your few trusted products, you’ll be good to go! DON’T Be afraid to experiment, because that’s the only way you’ll know what works for you! I’m no Natural hair expert, BUT I’m really honest! Being a Natural is liberating BUT it can/will be scary, confusing, and frustrating at times. Just know that it takes time and the less time you spend worrying about your “Natural hair Goals”, the more time your hair will be able to get there more peacefully!
A N D Last but not least, please don’t COMPARE. Every Naturalista has a different texture, method, routine, and outcome! Be inspired but stay true to YOU. Never envy any one else’s curls or length or thickness. ALL Natural Hair is GOOD Hair.
So with all of that said, I wish you the best of luck on your journey! Stay Happy in every stage and remember–you’re not the only Naturalista feeling the way you feel!
