Completely Plant-based, Gluten-Free, Nut-free, and Vegan!
This Creamy Homemade Oat Milk is definitely a recipe that has become a staple in my fridge. Lately, I've noticed a major trend of homemade milks, especially when it comes to Oat Milk, with famous brands like Oatly taking center stage. It's a crowd favorite, and I can see why.
I have to admit I was a little late to the homemade plant-based milk train, opting for my favorite go-to brands like Califia Farms and So Delicious instead. They're amazing, so why make my own, right? Haha. Whelp. I've since given into the trend, and I must say that I'm glad I did.
Making my own Oat Milk was a learning curve. There are a few tricks I've learned that drastically affect the outcome. I'm talking avoiding an ooey-gooey, slimy texture and getting a creamy oat milk masterpiece instead. With a little practice and finesse, I have mastered the perfect recipe of oaty goodness to share with you.
GF rolled oats
Filtered water
Agave
Dates
Vanilla extract
Sea salt
Ground Cinnamon
Did someone say oaty goodness? Oats are super nutritious and a great way to get extra vitamins on a vegan plant-based diet or any diet for that matter! They include a great source of carbs, fiber (the soluble kind!), protein, and fat.
In addition, they are loaded with important vitamins, minerals, and antioxidants.
Other great benefits:
Oat milk is super versatile and can be used in many different recipes. Some of our favorite ways to incorporate this yummy vegan-friendly plant milk is in coffee, smoothies, chocolate oat milk, homemade vegan chocolate oat bars, or any baked goodies like cakes, cookies, or our much-loved vegan banana pancakes. Essentially anywhere you normally use milk, you can sub it for oat milk.
If you have an allergy to nuts, then you are able to enjoy other allergy-free plant-based milk such as soy milk, rice milk, coconut milk, hemp milk, flax milk, rice milk, and the list goes on!
When properly stored in the refrigerator, oat milk lasts for up to 1 week, at best. Usually, I like to consume my batch within the first 2-3 days. The great thing is that making a new batch isn’t hard at all.
Of course, it depends on your preference and time. However, making anything homemade gives you more control over the ingredients used. Store-bought oat milk might be filled with added sugars, oils, thickeners, and salts, which aren’t that good for you, depending on the brand.
Absolutely! Dates are a great sweetener option, however, if you aren't a fan of their taste or might be allergic to them, you can simply adjust the amount of Agave used as a replacer.
Yup! To ensure that your oats blend to an incredibly smooth consistency along with your other ingredients, it's super important that you let your oats soak in fresh water for 15-20 minutes.
When it comes to most plant-based milk, there is always some form of controversy! Like if we need to spell milk like mylk or not.. (But that is a whole other story) The most popular store-brought Oat Milk Oatly has now gotten a lot of bad rap for not being as healthy as we thought due to certain additives and oils being added.
However, making your own dairy-free milk means you can forgo all the sneaky additives. Oat Milk is definitely a great option for those who are allergic or intolerant to dairy, have a nut allergy, or even a gluten allergy (ensure that you purchase the gluten-free oats if you are gluten sensitive).
Oat Milk also has a great source of fiber (obviously from the oats) and B Vitamins, and other great minerals. They are very filling and help support healthy weight management. Lastly, they are great at providing energy since they are higher in carbohydrates.
Lately, I’ve been asked for advice on keeping things interesting, especially when eating a plant-based or vegan diet. While I’m not a total Herbivore, my family and I make a commitment to eating most things that are Vegan.
To start, I’d recommend reading our article, How to Best Transition into a Plant-Based or Vegan Diet, which best explains how to keep your focus and continue on with eating healthy.

LOVE THIS RECIPE?
LET US KNOW!
H! looking forward to making this recipe. I just need some clarification on the directions. After I soak the oats in 2 cups of water(rinse and drain twice), I put the drained oats in the blender along with 3 cups of fresh water ?
Hi Ana! I can't wait to hear how it turns out! Yes, that's correct! You'll add the drained oats and 3 cups of fresh water to blend. 🙂
Nice recipe! I can't wait to try this homemade oat milk. I need to find the ingredients so I can make it this weekend.
Hi I am going to try this method of making oat milk but I'm a little confused by the first step. You said to soak the oats in the water and then drain, do you disgard the drained water and keep the oats? Then when you say put all ingredients in a blender does that mean the oats you have just soaked and rinsed with 5-6 cups of fresh water? Thanks
Hi Kyla! I'm so sorry for any confusion! You can actually drain, rinse, and then drain again, discarding of the drained water. When adding all ingredients to the blender, you'll be adding the 5-6 cups of fresh water! I do hope that you enjoy it! 🙂
I struggle majorly with foods and allergies - soy and almond milks are out, so this is something I definitely can do! Thank you for the recipe!
No worries at all! I know how hard it is to find recipes for major food allergies! I do hope that you get a chance to give this a try!
