These Cinnamon Roll Doughnuts are more than a simple sweet treat. They do live up to their name in every way! Super fluffy, round, and a sure way to get your fingers sticky with pure goodness; these Cinnamon Roll Doughnuts are a killer dessert idea that will get the crowd talking! Not to mention, this recipe is super easy and these beauties are baked! Yes, baked! No frying and all using healthy ingredients (minus the sugar! But even the sugar is better! Haha!).
Recently I’ve fallen in love with Cinnamon Rolls and even made a vegan version, which was dynamite! Rather than remake the same dessert, I chose to test things out in doughnut form and I am happy with my decision and so was my Husband and little guy (probably more than me! Haha!). You definitely won’t miss another Cinnamon Roll after eating these! Besides, who doesn’t love a good doughnut, right? I mean I’m sure that statistically speaking, doughnuts are consumed almost more than any other sweet treat. I believe it’s somewhere around 10 billion doughnuts are made in the U.S. each year, according to Huffington Post.
1. Boston, MA has the most doughnut shops per person
2. During WWI, they were fed to American soldiers
3. They used to be called ‘olykoeks’
4. Both ‘donut’ and ‘doughnut’ are acceptable spellings
5. June 7th is National Donut Day
6. Dunkin’ Donuts was once named ‘Open Kettle’
7. They may have originally been “created” by mistake
8. Americans eat a LOT of doughnuts
9. People are named Doughnut/Donut
10. The Guinness World Record for fastest to eat a jelly-filled doughnut exists
Yes, so doughnuts are pretty special, Ya’ll! Haha!
Anyway, this recipe is dedicated to all my Cinnamon Roll lovers and if you’re not a fan, I would recommend trying these. I’m sure you’ll cave in! Be sure to check it out below.
Best Cinnamon Roll Doughnuts
- 2 cups all-purpose flour I used Bob Red Mill's
- 3/4 cups cane sugar You can also use white sugar
- 2 tsps baking powder
- 1/2 tsp brown cinnamon
- 1/2 tsp ground nutmeg
- 1 tsp sea salt
- 3/4 cup buttermilk See NOTES
- 2 eggs
- 2 Tbsps vegetable oil
- Pam cooking spray
Cinnamon Roll Topping
- 2 Tbsps unsalted butter
- 2 tsps ground cinnamon
- 5 Tbsps brown sugar
- 1 tsp milk I used coconut milk
- 1 tsp cornstarch
White Drizzle (Glaze)
- 3/4 cups powdered sugar
- 1 Tbsp milk Add additional gradually if needed
To Make Doughnut:
Preheat your oven to 425 degrees Fahrenheit and grease a doughnut pan with Pam oil spray.
Add the flour, cane sugar, baking powder, nutmeg, cinnamon and sea salt to a large bowl and whisk them together until they’re completely combined.
In a separate bowl, combine the buttermilk, eggs, and oil, whisking them together.
Add the wet ingredients to the dry ingredients and using a rubber spatula, fold gently until a batter begins to form and the flour begins to disappear. Don't over-mix as this will make the donuts tough and dry.
Pipe a small amount of batter into each of the 6 large greased doughnut cups (or 12 if you're using a smaller version) in a circular motion and be careful not to over-fill (about 1/2 full).
Bake the doughnuts for about 7-9 minutes.
Once the doughnuts have browned slightly on the tops and they spring back to the touch, remove them from the oven and tip them out of their tins to let them cool completely.
To Make Cinnamon Roll Topping + Drizzle (Glaze):
Melt the butter in a saucepan on medium-low heat and add the cinnamon, brown sugar, milk, and cornstarch. Heat until it just bubbles. Take it off the heat and pour into a medium bowl.
Once doughnuts have cooled, take each one with your hand and dip (flat way) into the cinnamon roll topping and place on a cooling rack to harden. Repeat until all are complete.
Whisk the milk into the powdered sugar adding more of each ingredient until desired consistency. Using a piping bag (or ziploc bag with the tip cut off), lightly drizzle the glaze on top of each doughnut.
To Make Buttermilk: Simply use 3/4 cups of milk (I used evaporated milk) and 1 Tablespoon of lemon juice and stir. Let sit for about 5 minutes at room temperature.
Wallah! A sweet Cinnamon Roll Doughnut to the rescue!
